Founder's Story

Anwar Insurance Agency was founded by Shomita Rahman, an entrepreneur driven by a deep passion for protecting and empowering small businesses. The story of Anwar Insurance is not just about business—it’s about a legacy. The company is named after Shomita’s grandfather, Anwar, whose love and protection left an indelible mark on her life.

When Shomita reflects on insurance, she thinks about more than policies and coverage. She thinks about protection—providing people with a sense of safety so they can thrive. Her earliest memories of feeling truly safe and cared for are with her grandfather, a man whose presence shielded her from all harm. Though he passed away when she was just five years old, his protective spirit has continued to guide her. Inspired by this deep sense of safety, Shomita founded Anwar Insurance to extend that same level of care and security to her clients. At Anwar, every client is protected with the same dedication her grandfather showed to her.

With a background in the insurance industry and a unique understanding of the challenges small businesses face, Shomita realized that many insurance providers offered cookie-cutter solutions that didn’t always meet the specific needs of impact-driven businesses. This inspired her to start her own agency in 2012, focusing on delivering customized insurance solutions that align with each client’s mission, vision, and operational goals.

Shomita’s experiences—both as a business owner and a community member—instilled in her a commitment to supporting businesses that are focused on doing good in the world. From local entrepreneurs to companies working across borders, her agency specializes in helping businesses navigate the complexities of insurance, particularly in sectors that require specialized or high-risk coverage. Over the years, Anwar Insurance Agency has grown into a trusted partner for over 800 small businesses, built on values of integrity, trust, and innovation.

Shomita earned her Executive MBA from Columbia Business School and holds an undergraduate degree from Macaulay Honors College via Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. A New Yorker through and through, she believes in supporting local businesses in New York City and surrounding areas. Her dedication to her clients and her expertise in insurance for transportation, commercial property, and other sectors have allowed the agency to thrive and evolve while maintaining the personal touch that sets it apart. For Shomita, the success of Anwar Insurance is not just measured in policies sold, but in the long-term relationships built, the businesses protected, and the communities supported. Through this lens, she continues to lead her agency with the goal of empowering more businesses to achieve their vision, all while ensuring that their purpose is protected every step of the way.
